Stimulating Home Office Interior Designs
This feminine study was introduced at the 2014 BIA Parade of Homes, where it won the gold award for its category. It’s only our opinion, but we think the award was won due in part to the fact it was designed with an actual person in mind, not to mention the show stopping crystal chandelier! After the show ended the contents of the study was moved and installed into its final space where it is used daily as a home office.
Draperies were first introduced hundreds of years ago to combat drafts. To this day, though not as often, draperies still serve the same purpose. Drafty historic windows or the infamous bay window would benefit from draperies. The stunning custom window treatments you see here are a combination of drapery and sheer. They do more than just look great and add color. Their permanent installation is in a bay window, which catches the morning sun. The full panels will help to insulate the bay, as well as provide privacy at night, while the sheers will filter the direct sunlight in the morning.
The furniture in this home office is a combination of custom and manufactured. The custom built bookcase was specifically designed to hold an immense collection of resource binders and reference books. Though it is in three pieces the continuous crown and baseboard give it a unified look. The credenza, also custom, features three lateral file drawers as well as a fourth drop down door for flat paper storage. The fluted kidney desk from one of our many furniture manufacturers was just the right feminine touch and also helped to ease the budget since it wasn’t custom.
A Home Office Decoration - Dressed For Success
There is absolutely nothing wrong with manufactured furniture. Here you see a second floor study that opens to a family room. The space did not allow for a floating desk nor a peninsula, so we opted for a manufactured piece that put the seating space at an angle.
The client wanted to embrace a warm rich atmosphere while not drawing too much attention from the first floor. The solution was to keep the paint color consistent but richen the other materials. Using their existing leather chair the earthy color palette was formed. Deep wood tones compliment the existing stain without trying to match it. The carpet is a handsome cut and loop pattern of one color creating texture and interest without dominating the attention of your eyes as they move about the room.
Scale is an important part of window treatments. This study is no exception. Wood blinds emphasis the wood tones and balance the rich palette with a dramatic valance above for color and movement. This treatment offers privacy, light control, pattern and balance, without overwhelming the space.
The Tiffany inspired light fixture added much needed drama to the ceiling, but not an intense amount of light. Task lighting is then used for work surfaces, as shown with the under-cabinet lighting on the desk hutch.
Maximize, Optimize & Prioritize Your Study Space
Who says small spaces shouldn’t have dark colors? The sheer drama of color, creates such an impact in this multi-use space, you would never know it’s only 10ft by 12ft. The directive was to create a home office, study and man cave. Luckily this client is very willing to listen to creative solutions and encourages outside-of-the-box thinking! Though the space was built for the man of the house, he wanted his lovely wife to have an occasional work space. He also wanted the ability to watch movies and TV from a large screen.
Customization was key to maximizing this space. Files were measured for storage, books and trophies were measured for shelf space. Though the aircraft carrier theme never really got off the ground, we did manage to keep an influence with the sleek rounded corner cabinet, metallic ceiling and the appearance of corrugated metal at the window treatment.
Glass desk tops create an illusion of space while still supplying the maximum amount of work surface, not just for one, but two. Desktop drawers store the necessities to keep the desk clear, as well as a charging station for phones and laptops. And oh but yes, his beloved navy chair (not shown due to camera angle) is ready for the next movie showing.
